Description

The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is a 14th-century church, with a west tower, nave, aisles, and chancel. It was repaired and altered in 1910. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone with Barnack stone dressings.

The west tower has three stages with restored stepped battlements, a small leaded spire, and diagonal buttressing. A newel stair features two quatrefoil cusp openings at the south-east angle, with string-courses marking the stages. The west door has continuous moulding and jamb shafts with moulded bases to a two-centred arch with a label. A lancet window is located on the first stage. The belfry stage has two trefoil openings in a two-centred arch with a label and stops to each facet. Inside the tower, the plain two-centred arch connects to blind openings in the north and south walls. An archway and doorway on the east wall have deep mouldings and jamb shafts with moulded capitals and bases, topped with a label having a single head stop. Above the doorway is a 15th-century niche with a trefoil head and flanking square shafts, diagonally set, with pinnacles. A stoop recess is situated to the right of the doorway. The nave has a plain tiled roof with a parapet to the gable end, while the clerestory has six circa 1910 windows of two cinquefoil lights in two-centered heads with moulded labels. In 1910, the aisles were widened and extended to flank the chancel, with leaded roofs. The south aisle has eight two-stage buttresses and five three-light windows with cinquefoil heads, four-centred arches, and labels, two of which retain original head stops. The east end of the south aisle includes two 14th-century trefoil light windows in two-centered heads and one circa 1910 three-cinquefoil light window with vertical tracery in a four-centred head. Two porches are located on the south aisle, one to the south-west, dating to the 15th century with diagonal buttressing, a pedimented gable end with moulded coping, and one to the south-east circa 1910 with a pedimented gable end and a four-centred, moulded stone arch to the entry. The chancel roof is of plain tiles with a parapet to the gable end. The circa 1910 east window features five cinquefoil lights with flowing tracery in a two-centred head. The north aisle has five circa 1910 three-light windows with cinquefoil heads and four-centred heads and labels. One 14th-century three-cinquefoil window in a four-centred head with a label with head stops is situated at the west end of the north aisle. The interior of the nave now comprises six bays, with one added circa 1910. It includes octagonal columns with moulded capitals and bases, and two-centred arches of two orders with labels and head terminations, some original. A 14th-century chancel arch was re-erected circa 1910. The church also contains upper and lower doorways to a restored rood stair, a 14th-century font that is plain octagonal with shafts, and a two centred arch with label and two moulded orders with rounded responds with embattled capitals and moulded bases.
