Description

Marmion House Hotel is a house that has been converted into a hotel, dating from the early 19th century. It was raised to three storeys and extended to the east around 1860. The building was originally the home of a stone mason named Samuel Andrews and his family from 1820. It features local brown brick that is pebble dashed, with rusticated stone quoins and dressings. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, showcasing deep boarded eaves and side stacks.

The structure has three storeys and three bays, along with a basement. Each floor level has casement windows with moulded stone architraves, key blocks, and lion masks in the corner bosses. The central entrance is accessed by three moulded stone steps and is framed by a pilastered doorcase, which includes rosettes on the frieze and a sculptured plaque. Inside, the hotel retains contemporary plastered ceilings and other 19th-century details.

Additionally, there is a boundary wall that features four stone statues, which are possibly from the 19th century, resited in niches. Historical references include Wisbech Trade Directories from the 19th century, the photographic collection of Sam Smith at the Wisbech and Fenland Museum from 1853, and the book "British Sculptors" by Gunnis from 1951, as well as "English Churchyard Memorials" by F. Burgess.
