Description

The Maze is a house dating from the mid-18th century to the 19th century. It is constructed of narrow gault brick with red brick used for the quoins, although the front wall is partly obscured by later render. The side walls feature English bond brickwork. The house has a steeply pitched roof made of Welsh slate and end stacks that have been rebuilt. It is designed in an L-plan and consists of two storeys.

The front facade includes raised and moulded surrounds for three sixteen-pane hung sash windows, with three similar windows on the ground floor and two doorways. The doorway on the right has a late 18th-century panelled door, while the left-hand doorway features a later door but retains an early 19th-century rectangular fanlight with glazing bars. At the rear, there is a kitchen wing.

Inside, the layout includes a hall and stair bay flanked by two rooms, with an additional room to the left. The staircase, dating from around 1750, has an open string design with four flights, enriched tapering columns acting as balusters, and square newels with sunken panels and a moulded rail. There are three doorways on the ground floor, each with round-headed arches, raised surrounds, and scrolled keyblocks with bead enrichment, leading to raised and fielded panelled doors. The original fireplaces are made of narrow red and yellow gault brick.
