Description
No. 86 High Street is a mid-19th century building that originally served as a County Court and is now a club. It is constructed of white brick and features a hipped slate roof. The building has an elaborate cornice with modillions and dentils, along with a frieze made of patterned burnt brickwork. There are internal stacks with raised panels on the sides and an entablature with a projecting capping. The structure has a double pile plan and is designed in the Italianate style, standing two storeys tall with an attic.
The main cornice is a moulded band that runs below six attic windows, and there is a band between the ground and first floors. The first floor windows are framed by cut and moulded brickwork, featuring six round-headed arches with raised key blocks. The four central windows are coupled, and there is a band at impost height with a frieze of burnt brickwork underneath. The ground floor exhibits channelled rustication with four similar window openings, flanked by two round-headed arches in slightly projecting bays that have a dentilled cornice.
The right-hand entryway features a Royal Coat of Arms in stucco above a double recessed archway that leads to the courtroom. The left-hand carriageway has panelled doors with a grille above. Inside, the original staircase remains intact, as does the coffered ceiling in the courtroom, which is now obscured, along with an archway on moulded corbels connecting the robing room to the court.
