Description
Ye Olde Griffin Hotel is an inn that dates back to the 16th century, with additions from the 18th and late 19th centuries. The building is constructed of brick and rendered, featuring parapetted slate roofs that are hipped over the crosswings. Originally, it had a single range plan facing High Street, but the wings were added later, creating an H-plan layout. The hotel is two storeys high with an attic. The central range includes five recessed hung sash windows, each with twelve panes. There is a central doorway topped by a 20th-century segmental canopy supported by brackets. The crosswings have parapetted canted elevations facing High Street. The Market Place front showcases a late 19th-century shop facade with four bays, including the entry bay, divided by wooden pilasters that have enriched ionic capitals, along with a plain frieze and dentil cornice. Inside, the original 16th-century clasped side purlin roof features carpentered rafters of heavy scantling, which remain largely intact.
