Description
The Smedley Canning Factory is a Grade II listed building located on Lynn Road in Wisbech. This factory office, built around 1923 by the Smedley family, showcases an Art Deco style. It features a combination of moulded stone and brown brick, with two storeys and a basement, presenting a symmetrical facade. The building is topped with a stepped pediment that has sunk panelled quoins rising above the parapet, which is adorned with relief, contoured, geometric designs. A deep frieze, originally displaying the lettering 'National Canning Company Ltd.', has been removed. An enriched cornice runs along the parapet, while the windows, which have metal glazing bars of various sizes, are symmetrically arranged in two-storey brick panels that flank the main entrance. The entrance bay includes a first-floor window with a stone key block and features stepped and recessed panels. A horizontal, segmental-shaped canopy, supported by a fanned key block, shelters the doorway, which retains its original two-panelled double doors.
