Description
Chatteris House is a building dating from 1828. It is a three-story structure with a basement, built of yellow brick with stone bands separating the floors. The building has a hipped slate roof and internal stacks. Three central bays are slightly projected, featuring a pediment with a blind oval in the tympanum. A set of eight stone steps leads to a central portico supported by two Greek Doric columns, with a frieze featuring triglyphs and a projecting cornice. The main entrance is a fine mahogany door with a carved central panel, set within a door case with panelled reveals, and surmounted by a rectangular fanlight. Cast iron decorated balustrades flank the portico and form a balconette above the first-floor windows. Two large showroom windows now replace the original four casement windows at the first floor. The upper floors have a symmetrical five-window range of hung sashes with glazing bars, and a central casement window with glazing bars to the first floor balconette.
The interior features fine Greek Revival decoration to the friezes and cornices of the first-floor rooms, including plaster centre pieces. A six-flight staircase with two landings has stone steps, a cast iron balustrade, and a mahogany handrail. A central cupola is present, and original doors remain throughout the building. A sales catalogue from November 1909 provides further details about the room layouts and plans.
