Description
Barton Lodge is an early 19th century house that was originally known as 'The Bird in Hand' public house, which was associated with a brewery in Barton Road. The building has two storeys and a basement, constructed of red brick with a yellow gault brick facade facing the street, and features a slate roof with end stacks and stone copings along the parapet.
On the first floor, there are three hung sash windows set within recessed segmental arches, each with stone cills. A plaster band runs between the floors. To the left of the doorway, there is a large three-light hung sash window with a segmental arch. The entrance has a plain wooden doorcase with a recessed six-panelled door, and there is another hung sash window to the right of the doorway. The building is documented in "Inns and Taverns of Wisbech" by A.A. Oldham, published in 1950, and is illustrated in photographs and prints from the 18th and 19th centuries by W. & F. Mus.
