Description
Sibalds Holme is a house that was possibly built in the early 19th century and later altered by Algenon Peckover in the late 19th century. The alterations included the addition of two three-storey canted bay windows with linking parapets. The house features a symmetrical facade with a central three-storey block flanked by two-storey wings. It is constructed of local brown brick with stone dressings and has slated roofs with two chimneys. A deep, moulded stone cornice runs along the top, repeated on the wings and the gabled ends. The corners are accentuated by giant pilasters that extend to the cornice.
There is a stone Doric portico from the 19th century that includes a wide three-panelled door and a rectangular fanlight above it. The first-floor window above the door has a moulded stone architrave, while the second-floor window is similar and features cast-iron railings for the balconette. Each matching wing has two hung sash windows and balconettes on the first floor. A cast-iron house sign is also present.
Inside, the original details remain intact, including the staircase, chimneypieces, and original doors with reeded doorcases. The property is complemented by a flanking garden wall with brick piers and a stone urn finial. Historical references include photographs and prints from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as works by W. & F. Mus. Walker and Craddock, and A. Peckover.
