Description
The Chequers is a coaching inn originally built in the 17th century. It features a three-unit timber-framed plan that has been encased in gault brick in the early 19th century. The building has a low pitch modern tile roof. There is a later 19th-century single-bayed extension to the east, which is one storey with an attic, and a low service range to the west made of plastered clunch, flint, and painted brick, both topped with red pantile roofs.
The original building is two storeys high and has a moulded wooden eaves cornice. On the first floor, there are three recessed twelve-paned hung sash windows set in segmental brick arches. The ground floor features four sixteen-paned hung sash windows with similar segmental arches. To the right of centre, there is a half-glazed door with a reeded wooden architrave. The eastern range includes one four-paned hung sash window and a flat-roofed dormer window. The western range has a hipped roof, two casement windows, one four-paned hung sash window, and a half-glazed door.
