Description

This is a late 16th-century house located on Carter Street in Fordham. The house has a close-studded timber frame of high quality, which is plastered. The roof features a steeply pitched side purlin and a Queen-post truss, covered with plain tiles. A tall stack is situated in the angle of the building, constructed from clunch and local brick. The eastern facade was faced with gault brick around 1830. The house extends over two storeys, with a cellar and attics.

The main entrance facade, which faces east, has two hipped dormer windows with leaded light casements. Below them are two first-floor windows with twelve panes, recessed within cambered, gauged brick arches. Ground floor windows are also hung sash windows with side lights and glazing bars. The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door within a moulded wooden architrave, with panelled reveals, columns, and a pediment – this is a modern addition.

Internally, the house features original framed walls, a dog-leg staircase, and a fine early 17th-century panelled room on the first floor, complete with its original chimney piece.
