Description
The School is a building dated 1714, as indicated by a plaster panel in the gable wall, which is partly covered by an extension added in 1877 when it became the National School. A cross-wing was built around 1920 and features a plaque commemorating the years 1914-1919. The structure is made of clunch with some limestone repairs and has red brick gable walls, topped with a steeply pitched slate roof.
The building has a symmetrical facade with one storey and a central doorway that is sealed but retains its original moulded architrave, key block, and cornice. Above the doorway, there are two round arch niches: one on the left featuring a girl with the inscription 'TRAIN UP A CHILD', and one on the right depicting a boy with the inscription 'NAKED AND YE CLOTHED ME'. The facade also includes two large round arched hung sash windows that are shaped to arch, rusticated quoins, and a moulded cornice. The original school was funded by the will of Samuel Richardson.
