Description

Ram Cottage is a timber-framed cottage dating from around 1630. It is largely rendered, but retains clunch (a local ragstone) in much of the front and rear walls. The roof is thatched with reed, and features an original ridge stack with diagonally set shafts. The cottage is of a three-bay, lobby-entry plan, with a single storey and attic. Two later gabled dormers have been added. The front door is positioned opposite the stack, and is flanked by later window openings. Remnants of arches for 18th-century window openings are visible in the front wall. Inside, pegs for studs are visible in the front and rear walls. The chimney bay is timber-framed and contains an original brick and clunch stack. One ceiling has substantial scantling joists laid flat, while another has joists laid on edge, a style more typical of the 17th century. The cottage features abutting inglenook hearths.
