Description

Bowyers Cottage, together with No. 74, is a pair of cottages dating from the early 19th century, although it may incorporate an earlier core possibly dating from 1730. The cottages were likely built for Thomas Bowyer, who died in 1824. They are of timber-frame construction with rendered walls, and have a pantile roof topped by a brick ridge stack. Originally, the cottages likely consisted of a single unit with a pantry plan. They are single-storey with an attic, and have a seven-window front with single- and two-light windows, some featuring horizontal sliding sashes. Four dormers with horizontal sliding sashes light the attic. The interiors have not been inspected. The cottages are little altered and were probably built, or remodelled, by Thomas Bowyer for his workforce. He was a local merchant involved in trading activities on the Swaffham Lode, operating from a nearby wharf.
