Description
This cottage, located at 1 School Lane, dates from the 16th century with alterations made in the late 19th century. It features an exposed timber-frame structure with late 19th century red brick infill and a rendered southeast gable. The roof is covered with combed wheat reed thatch, hipped at the southeast end, and there is a square red brick ridge stack that is rendered. The building has a three-bay, lobby entry plan, which includes a narrower entry and chimney bay, and it stands two storeys tall. The timber framing displays close studding with a middle rail and curved downward bracing from the main posts to the studs, which have jowled heads. On the first floor, there are two 19th century casement windows and a small closet window opposite the stack. The ground floor features two wooden casement windows on either side of the lobby entry doorway.
