Description
Timber Cottage is a cottage dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It features a timber frame with exposed and rendered infill and has a long straw thatch roof that is half hipped. A 17th-century red brick ridge stack has been inserted. The building has a single range plan consisting of four bays, with the two bays facing the road likely representing the solar end of what was once an open hall, which was removed and replaced in the 17th century. The east end has one storey and an attic, while the middle rail and weathered studwork are of substantial scantling. There is a blocked lobby entry doorway on the north side, one small window opening on the south side, and two modern wood windows at the ground floor. The bays at the west end have studs that run continuously from the sole to the wall plate, and there is one dormer on the west side.
Inside, there is a cambered tie beam on the west side of the chimney bay, and both the chimney and a subsidiary tie beam forming the east side of the chimney bay were inserted in the 17th century. The building features a braced wall frame, and the ground floor ceilings throughout are from the 17th century, with joists laid on edge. A stop-chamfered lintel is present above the hearth.
