Description
28 St Mary's Street is a large 18th-century house made of yellow gault brick. It features a decorative wood cornice with modillions and has three storeys plus cellars. The front has a five-window arrangement with double-hung sash windows that have glazing bars, all set in flush cased frames. On the east end, there is a single-storey addition with three windows and a stone Tuscan doorcase that includes a coat of arms above, framed by pilasters. At the back, there is a large circular brick bow with three tall sash windows set in stuccoed reveals. Inside, the house boasts an ornamental plaster cornice from the 18th century.
This property is part of a group that includes Nos 20, 22, 22A, 24 to 30 (even), 34, 36, 36A, 38, and 40 to 60 (even), as well as Nos 13 to 29 (odd) and 29A, Parson's Almshouses, and Nos 1 to 5 (odd) Downham Road. It also groups with No 20 Church Lane and the Parish Church of St Mary.
