Description

The Granary is a cottage dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, with significant alterations and restorations in the 18th century and mid-to-late 20th century. It is timber framed and largely cased and partly rebuilt in 18th-century brick, with painted surfaces. The roof is covered in cement tiles, and there is an 18th-century ridge stack made of red brick. The cottage has one storey and an attic, with three modern dormers. The ground floor has three modern casement windows set within 18th-century openings. Internally, some of the original timber framing is visible in a few places, and the wall thickness suggests either casing or rebuilding in brick. There are abutting inglenook hearths, and the ceiling above the centre of the cottage features heavy, flat-laid joists. The current doorway’s location may correspond to the site of the original cross passage.
