Description
No 82 is a house located on Main Street, dating from the early 18th century. It is likely timber-framed and features plaster and roughcast rendering, with modern weatherboarding on the east wall. The house stands on a brick plinth and has a pyramidal plain tiled roof with a central valley and two symmetrical internal stacks.
The facade is two storeys high and nearly symmetrical, with three 19th-century twelve-pane flush frame hung sash windows. On either side of the c1840 wooden plain pilaster doorcase, which has a narrow hood, are two similar windows that feature 19th-century wood moulded labels. The rear side walls have early 18th-century three-light cross frame casements, and the rear wall is plaster rendered, showing some evidence of incised rear doorways.
Inside, there is a narrow hall flanked by two family rooms, one of which contains a mid to late 19th-century painted slate fireplace. The staircase is from the early 19th century, and there are back-to-back fireplaces. The roof includes machine-cut rafters, incorporating some older members. The doors are raised and fielded panelled with H and L-hinges. Historically, the house and farm were owned by Clare College, Cambridge at the time of enclosure.
