Description

The barn and storehouse, dating to the late 14th century (circa 1575), is part of the monastery complex and stands to the south of Ely Porta, which was built towards the end of the 15th century. It extends to the east and is now incorporated into the King's School. The building is rectangular, comprising seven bays, with the eastern five bays originally used as a granary and the western bays as a storehouse. The upper storey is currently the school’s dining hall.

The barn is constructed of Carr stone rubble with welldon stone dressings. The north front features buttresses; one was removed when a covered staircase was built at the west end, although its original position remains visible. The south front is plain and has a thicker wall. A 3-centred arched cart entrance was added to the ground storey in the 15th century. A large 4-centred doorway to the granary has been altered into a window to provide light for the staircase leading to the dining hall. Some original tall, narrow loophole windows remain in the granary, alongside some original 1 and 2-light square windows with cusped arches. An arched doorway, originally serving as the head of an external covered staircase, is still present. The tiled roof has stopped end gables, and the roof structure was restored in the 20th century and is now exposed within the dining hall.

A 17th century cottage, originally used as a storekeeper's house, was built against the western wall of the barn in the 18th century. It is two storeys high and has casement windows and a tiled roof.
