Description
The Plantation Gate houses at Nos. 1, 3, and 5 date to around 1770. They are constructed of local narrow red and gault brick in English bond, set upon a plinth. The steeply pitched roof is thatched and boxed with corrugated iron, with patterned red brick tumbling to the gable ends, creating parapets. End stacks are present, featuring string courses. The buildings originally comprised a single range, with later 19th-century additions to the rear. The houses are two storeys high, with an attic space, and feature two gable dormers. The original front has three first-floor windows, originally set within red brick header arches. The central window is a three-light design with small-pane metal casements, thought to be of 18th-19th century origin. A string course runs between the ground and first floors. On the ground floor, the original window arches retain stilted brickwork and alternating patterned red and gault brick detailing. The ground floor windows themselves are modern replacements. An inset panel above the first-floor central window is made up of three red bricks laid on edge, incised with the initials W.R.E. and M.R., along with the date 1770. The west gable end displays a red brick diaper pattern, in addition to the brick tumbling, and incorporates iron ties formed into the initials W.R.
