Description

Knights Manor is a house located on High Street in Swaffham Prior, dating from the mid-16th century at the rear, with a front range built in the mid to late 19th century using clunch. This front range may have replaced a parlour wing of the original 16th-century house. The structure is timber-framed, partially rendered, and features a steeply pitched roof originally thatched, now covered with pantiles. The original ridge stack remains, although its upper courses were rebuilt in the 19th century. An end stack, added in the 17th century, is made of red brick in English bond with offsets.

The original layout consists of three bays and two rooms, including a two-bay hall, a cross-passage, and a single-bay service end. The house is two storeys high, with substantial framing and closely spaced timbers. The current windows and doorways are all from the 20th century. The corner posts exhibit cranked bracing to the middle rail. At the rear, there is a timber-framed stair turret that is likely contemporary with the main structure.

Inside, the principal posts in the hall are thickened at ceiling height to support the main beams of the floor frame, similar to the constructions found in Anglesey House and Rose Cottage, both also in Swaffham Prior. The main beams are stop-chamfered. One of the doorways leading to the original cross-passage is now blocked, but its arch remains, and the partition wall between the hall and the service bay is still intact.
