Description

Shadworth House is a cottage that may have originally been an open-hall, with a stack and floor added in the early to mid-16th century. In the 18th century, the cottage was subdivided, and a side stack was added at the rear. It was restored around 1977 but still retains some original features, including inglenook hearths, moulded beams, and part of a partition wall. The building is timber-framed with a brick or clunch sill and has a red pantiled roof that is raised at the rear. Internal stacks are made of 19th-century grey brick. On the right side, there is a gablet and a hipped roof over what was originally a shop. The house has one storey and attics, with four 20th-century cat-slide dormers. A short flight of steps with 19th-century iron railings leads up to the doorway, which is flanked by two windows, one of which is a bowed early 19th-century window. There are also two other windows, including another similar bowed window. Inside, the center bay features a ceiling with hollow and roll moulding on the main beam, with several joists and a middle rail forming a cornice; the other joists are replacements. A partition wall between the center bay and an end bay has exposed framing, indicating that it is older than the floor frame. A continuous center post is present in the hall. The construction style is similar to that of Well House in Swaffham Bulbeck, which also may have been an open-hall.
