Description

Old Barn House is a house that may have originally been built as a pair in the late 17th century, but it has undergone alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure is made of clunch rubble, which has been rendered and incised to resemble stone ashlar. The right gable end has been rebuilt several times, with the lower courses made of clunch and late 17th century red brick in English bond. The other courses feature an early 18th century chequerboard pattern of red brick headers and yellow brick stretchers, while the upper courses display mingled brickwork. The left gable end is constructed of clunch, but the gable itself is made of 19th century grey gault brick. The house has a steeply pitched plain tile roof with end parapets on kneelers and two similar ridge stacks from around 1880, which have recessed panels with red brick trefoil arched heads. Each half of the house has a lobby entry plan with two rooms on the ground floor and a staircase beside the stack. The building is two storeys tall and has a cellar. There are four recessed hung sashes dating from the mid to late 19th century, with three located on the ground floor. One doorway is situated opposite the right-hand stack, while the other doorway is now blocked. The right gable features a small original late 17th century window opening, which is also blocked.
