Description
Barclay's Bank is located at 16 Bene't Street and dates from the mid-18th century, with significant reconstruction in the late 19th century and restoration in 1970. The building is constructed of yellow brick, featuring late 19th-century stone dressings. It has an L-shaped design, with the shorter arm bowing forward. The structure has two storeys and an attic. The longer arm includes six windows and two doors, one of which is blank on the ground floor. All openings are late 19th-century, with pediments that alternate between triangular and carved styles. The ground floor was converted into a banking hall during the late 19th century. Above this, there are nine sash windows with glazing bars, five of which are from the mid-18th century. The building has a band at the first-floor level, a modillion cornice, and a balustraded parapet, topped by a tiled mansard roof. The bowed wing features three storeys, a rusticated ground floor, and pilasters. It has three windows, with a pediment on the first floor that includes keystone heads, and a balustraded parapet. Some interior features from the 18th century remain.
