Description

No. 8A, Keelson is a house built in the 1960s by Eric C Sorensen for Dr and Mrs Kennard. It is constructed with a timber frame, brick walls, and extensive glazing. The building features a part flat roof with a shallow double pitch over the living room wing, arranged around a courtyard plan.

The entrance is from the north-west, with a door located beneath a projecting canopy which also covers a carport, set into a white-painted brick wall. This wall has a continuous clerestory and a square window to the right. The two wings of the house form an internal courtyard, with a projecting roof supported by timber columns, extending around the end of the entrance wing to create a covered passage. The main courtyard elevation has glazed doors to the bedrooms, fitted with louvred shutters, and clerestory lighting above, positioned between projecting beam ends. The living room wing has four glazed bays of full height under a deep eaves overhang, with a brick chimneystack rising from the gable.

Inside, quarry tiles are used throughout. Timber columns and beams create a framework for the partitions, which are freestanding in the living room. The clerestory glazing is also continued as an internal glazed band above the partitions and doors. The building is recognised as a well-designed example of Danish domestic architecture in England.
