Description

The Sun House is a house built between 1938 and 1939 by architects Mullett and Denton Smith for William Cairns. It is designed in the Modern Movement style and features painted brick laid in stretcher bond with bituminous felt roofs. The layout includes a single-storey wing running west to east, which connects to a two-storey cross wing at the eastern end. This cross wing has a full-width bow on the south side, fitted with three 3-light Crittall windows on each floor. The flat roof has wide painted fascia boards.

The single-storey wing has a quadrant corner at the south-west, highlighted by a curved Crittall window. A projecting sun lounge is attached to the south side, featuring three plate-glass windows and a double-leaf glazed door. The flat roof of the sun lounge has a swept parapet, and a curved roof patio extends from the two-storey block, supported by two square-section timber posts. Around 1950, partition walls and Crittall windows were added to create a kitchen. The rear (north) elevation has a variety of 1-, 2-, and 3-light Crittall windows and a door.

Inside, all features date from 1938-39. The pine internal doors are decorated with large veneered letters. The lounge, located on the ground floor of the two-storey wing, includes fitted furniture, a radiogram with speaker outlets in the principal rooms, and uplighting wall lights. Central heating radiators are present throughout. A circular arch leads into the dining room, with the base of the arch cut tangentially for easier passage. The kitchen has fitted cupboards and shelving. The staircase is made of timber, except for the lower flight, which features laminated glass treads and string, with circular newels and a handrail clad in mirror tesserae. The principal bedroom on the first floor has a Belling electric fire, and the tiled bathroom includes a shower attachment controlled by recessed regulators. The house is notable for the preservation of its original fittings.
