Description

Alcantara is a house built in 1934 by A.H. Chapman for G.A.H. Miller. It features white brick with blue brick window heads and sill bands, a grey-blue tile roof, and a left center ridge stack. Designed in a Moderne style, it retains its original Crittall windows. The house has a rectangular plan with an oval hall. It is two storeys tall and has a five-window range on the first floor. The central bow has a tall three-light window with a small single-light window on either side, above a doorway with an angled head, a glazed hood, and similar single-lights beside it. On either side of the bow, there are three-light windows on each floor, with the lower ones being larger. The right end features a short stack, two- and three-light casements, and access to the back door and garage doors at the rear. The left end and rear have various casements, including a casement at the angle with a candle casement and a French window below. A conservatory added around 1960 incorporates parts from the shop front of the Miller shop from around 1900.

Inside, the oval two-storey hall includes the original mirror and table, and the staircase with a blank balustrade curves from the middle to a curved landing. The doors feature curved architraves, with the door to the kitchen opposite the bottom of the stairs also being curved. Original light fittings are present throughout. The sitting room has an original tile and veneered wood fireplace and inlaid veneered pelmets. The study features a tile and wood corner fireplace and inlaid veneered pelmets as well. The kitchen retains some original fittings. The main bedroom includes a tile and bolection-moulded wood fireplace, while the second bedroom has fine fitted furniture, pelmets, and a basin surround in an art deco version of linenfold, along with an original light fitting. The third bedroom contains a tile fireplace with a contemporary fitted electric fire and inlaid and veneered fitted wardrobe doors. The bathroom retains its original basin, mirror, and towel rail. Alcantara is a remarkably unaltered house from this period.
