Description
Cherry Hinton Hall is a small country house, now serving as a training centre, built in 1839 for John Okes. The building is constructed of gault brick with stone dressings and features parapeted slate roofs. It has ornamental brick stacks, some of which have multiple flues, and is designed in the Tudor style with coped gables topped with finials. The house is two storeys high, with an attic and cellar.
The entrance front consists of a six-window range at the first floor, featuring 2-light casements with hood-moulds, except for a single-light window that is second from the left. To the centre right, there is a projecting gable that includes a panelled door with a Tudor-arched surround, flanked by casements on the side walls and above. On either side of this projection, there are stone mullion and transom windows, with one on the right and two on the left, some of which have leaded lights. On the far left, a gabled projection contains a large square bay at the ground floor. Further left, there are two gabled ranges, one single-storey and the other two-storey. The right side of the front features 2- and 3-light casements above taller similar mullion and transom windows, along with a canted bay to the right. The rear of the house has various wings and 20th-century extensions. A large leaded mullion and transom window illuminates the main staircase.
Inside, the entrance hall includes an arched screen and a carved stone fireplace. The staircase hall features an open well staircase with a pierced fretwork balustrade. Other reception rooms have similar stone and marble fireplaces, while the first floor has simpler designs. Some rooms also feature cornices and panelled reveals, and there is a service staircase with a stick balustrade. The service wings mainly exhibit a 20th-century character.
Cherry Hinton Hall is a well-detailed example of its period, retaining many exterior and interior features. It is part of a group with The Lodge, along with the gate piers and gates at the drive entrance.
