Description
The gymnasium and art and craft studios, located to the west of Homerton College, were added to the college in 1914 by H.G. Ibberson. The building is constructed of English bond red and purple brick, featuring some stone dressings and flint panels. It has a steeply pitched plain tile roof with gabled ends and deep eaves supported by stone kneelers, showcasing the Arts and Crafts Style.
The plan includes a large gymnasium in the west range, with a cross-wing at the east end that contains a stair tower in the northwest corner and studios on the first floor. The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical south front. The main gymnasium range on the left is one storey with an attic, featuring four bays with brick piers between large semi-circular clerestory windows above boarded panels. The left pier rises above the eaves, while the right bay extends into a gable with a small three-light window. A small, long flat-roofed dormer is positioned above.
To the right, the gabled cross-wing has a three-bay loggia on the ground floor and a large stone mullion-transom window above, flanked by smaller side lights and flint panels, with a chequerwork of flint and brick. There is also a carved panel and a louvred ventilation slit in the gable above. The north end of the cross-wing features a similar window and four round arch windows, along with a low stair tower in the northwest corner. The west gable of the gymnasium includes a large stone mullion-transom window with a lancet and a ventilation slit above. The building has dated rainwater heads and leaded pane windows.
Inside, the gymnasium retains some original equipment and has a segmental arch apse. An oak open well staircase leads to the studios on the first floor, which are supported by arched roof trusses that are plastered over. The gymnasium and studios are attached to the west end of the Cavendish College, which was built between 1876 and 1891 and acquired by the Congregational Board of Education in 1894.
