Description

Shawms is a house built in 1938 by M. J. Blanco White. It features a timber frame on a concrete raft, with a concrete boiler room at the west end. The exterior is clad in horizontal weatherboarding and has a felt roof, showcasing a Modern Movement style. The house is two stories tall, plus a roof conservatory, and has a four-window range on the entrance (north) front. A glazed door is positioned to the right of center, sheltered by a flat projecting porch hood supported by two steel posts. The ground floor has a continuous frieze of sliding timber casement windows, while the first floor has three windows, each with four sliding plate-glass leaves. The south elevation consists of a five-window range, with the ground floor featuring two recessed bays, each with a three-light sliding casement, and three additional four-light sliding casements. The first floor is lit by five continuous plate-glass sliding casements, and there is a plain parapet. The flat roof is finished with concrete paving tiles. A single-storey rectangular roof conservatory, with a bowed south face, is continuously glazed to the south with five plate-glass casements. A stack is located at the west side. Inside, the house has hardboard wall cladding throughout and an open ladder staircase with an iron handrail.
