Description

Salix is a house built in 1934 and extended in 1936 by H C Hughes for Dr Oliphant, who later became Sir Mark Oliphant, an Australian scientist known for his work with Rutherford. The house is constructed of white painted rendered brick with bitumenised flat roofs and is designed in the International Modern style. It has two storeys on the left (west) side, which includes a living room, kitchen, and integral garage arranged around an entrance hall, with bedrooms located above. To the right (east) is a long single-storey bedroom wing that features a roof terrace above. In 1936, the first-floor bedroom accommodation was extended over the southwest corner.

The exterior consists of one and two storeys with a seven-window south front. The two-storey section on the left projects and features corner windows on its right. The low, long single-storey wing has five windows and a corner window on the right, along with a flat roof canopy above the roof terrace, which is accessed from the landing doorway in the two-storey block. The original metal frame windows remain, with continuous sills on the ground floor. The east elevation includes a cantilevered quadrant canopy over a glazed door, with garage doors to the right.

Inside, much of the original hardwood joinery is intact, including flush doors and a solid staircase balustrade with a moulded handrail. There is a simple brick fireplace in the living room. The house was formerly known as Brandon House.
