Description
Research flats at Churchill College were built between 1959 and 1960 by Sheppard Robson and Partners. The building is constructed of brown brick with flat roofs and features timber windows. It is two storeys high and has a compact swastika layout, with each flat having an outdoor terrace that is secluded by storey-height walls, which also serve as the walls of the flats. The horizontal roof line is prominently expressed. These flats are an integral part of the planned layout for Churchill College and were the first section to be constructed. The design reflects the principles of Cambridge New Architecture, as articulated by N. Taylor.
