Description

Willow House is a house built in 1932 by George Checkley, designed in the International Modern style. It features a white-painted render over a reinforced concrete structure with a flat bitumenised roof behind a parapet. The house is two storeys high, with a study on the west side and a kitchen and services on the east side. At the center, there is a split-level one-and-a-half storey hall/living room with a bedroom above, which rises above flat roof terraces. There is also a later single storey extension on the west side.

The exterior has five tall, symmetrically arranged windows on the first floor and window bands on the ground floor, along with a rendered porch to the right of the center that has a cantilevered canopy. The south garden front features four window bands on the ground floor, with the left of center having a French casement and thinner window bands on the first floor. There is a bay to the left of center with a thin window band under a cantilevered balcony, leading to a window in the raised bedroom above. This bedroom and stair block has a flat roof canopy that extends to the roof terrace. All windows are metal-frame with casements, and there is a terrace along the south front with a rendered parapet and steps leading down to the garden.

Inside, the house is largely unaltered and retains most of its original glazed steel frame doors. From the two-storey split-level hall/living room, a masonry winder staircase with a low solid balustrade leads up to an axial passage along the north front of the house, which has a glazed balcony overlooking the hall/living room. A second flight of stairs from the landing leads to the roof terrace. Willow House was formerly known as Thurso House.
