Description

White House is a house dating from 1930, designed by George Checkley. It is constructed of brick, which has been rendered and painted, and features a flat roof concealed behind a parapet. The house is of International Modern style, with a rectangular plan incorporating a central entrance hall and two main storeys, plus a smaller third storey set back on the centre of the roof terrace. The east front is symmetrical, with a central entrance flanked by bands of windows on both sides. A smaller band of windows is located on the first floor, and two windows are recessed on the third-storey roof terrace. Original metal-frame casement windows remain, although the sills are wooden. A later glazed door has been installed. The rear, west-facing elevation is less symmetrical and rises to a third storey; some windows have been replaced, and a small, single-storey addition has been made to the right of the centre. Inside, the central entrance hall contains a winder staircase with a solid balustrade at the rear.
