Description

House. The Homewood was designed in 1938-9 by Patrick Gwynne, built in the Modern Style. The building incorporates brick, mosaic tiling over concrete at ground level, concrete and glass above, and flat concrete roofs. The layout is L-shaped, with the main rooms on the upper floor to the left and a service wing to the right, connected by a staircase hall. It is two storeys high. The entrance front features a projecting wing to the left, supported by concrete piers, with a central round mosaic pier and saucer lights extending over the driveway. The first floor has a vertical plate glass sliding window, with two windows on the right side of the wing and four on the left. A stainless steel and glass block door is set within a recessed ground floor wall. A range to the right features a projecting wing at the end, separated by a vertical louvred fence. Continuous glass panels are on the first floor, and planked garage doors are at ground floor level. The right hand return front has an exterior staircase with an iron balustrade leading from the first floor. The left hand return front features a continuous window band to the first floor with two balcony recesses. The rear displays a glazed and panelled first floor over brick piers, set on the ground floor.
