Description

The Shoeburyness War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is situated in Gunner Park off Campfield Road and is made from Portland stone, marble, and granite.

The memorial features a Portland stone pillar topped with a pedimented collar that has carved details and a chamfered foot. This pillar rises from an octagonal plinth, which has polished marble panels on its faces that display incised gold-painted inscriptions. The entire structure is set upon a square base.

On the south-west face of the plinth, the inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN/ HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ SHOEBURYNESS/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ ALSO DURING/ 1939 – 1945." The names of those who fell in the First World War are listed on the other faces of the plinth.

At the base of the memorial, inclined granite tablets are positioned at each edge. One tablet on the south-west edge states: "SHOEBURYNESS RESIDENTS/ KILLED IN ACTION/ 1939 – 1945/ ROYAL AIR FORCE/ (19 NAMES)/ SUFFOLK REGT/ (1 NAME)." An additional 63 names from the Second World War are recorded on the other three granite tablets.

The memorial is surrounded by an octagonal paved area with a stone kerb, which is topped with eight short stone bollards.
