Description
The Church of St Matthew, built in 1846 by George Basevi with the steeple added a little later by F T Dollman, is located on the south side of High Street in Eye. It was constructed on the site of an ancient church that was demolished. The building is made of ashlar stone and features Collyweston stone roofs, designed in the Early English style with a cruciform plan. The nave includes lancet windows with cusped heads, and there are north and south transepts. The short chancel has triple lancet windows on the east side. The west tower is characterized by set back buttresses and a broach spire with lucarnes. Although the interior is of no particular interest, it houses a 14th-century octagonal font with traceried panels on a 19th-century base, as well as a stained glass east window created in 1863 by Gibbs.
