Description
64 Bute Street is a hat factory built in 1889, designed in a decorative neo-Jacobean style. The building is constructed from Luton grey bricks with stone dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. It stands three storeys high with a three-bay facade, which has pilasters at the corners and separating the central bay. Above the central bay is a pediment that includes a roundel edged in stone. The pediment is stone-coped and flanked by pilasters, with a decorated moulded brick panel below. The eaves and cornice are adorned with dentils.
On the second floor, the outer bay windows are casements set within architrave surrounds. The central bay features a pair of windows with semi-circular arched heads in a stone surround, along with a cill band. The first-floor windows maintain a similar style, with the outer two comprising three lights each, while the center window has two lights. These windows have stone surrounds with mullions and high-level transoms. Above them, there is a decorated panel featuring a cartouche and swags of flowers beneath a shallow brick and stone arch.
The ground floor includes a prominent central entrance flanked by two windows and a secondary doorway on the left. This section is topped by a continuous entablature and dentil cornice. The doorway itself is highlighted by a segmental pediment, and each architectural element is separated by Corinthian pilasters that mimic marble. The ground floor also features brick stall risers with arched openings leading to the cellar.
