Description

No. 40 Guildford Street is an impressive hat factory building dated 1905, designed in a debased Jacobean style. It features colourwashed brick and a Welsh slate roof, standing five storeys tall with attics and a five-bay facade. The central turret is highlighted by a Jacobean gable, which is topped with a small pediment that bears the date. This gable is flanked by paired pilasters, and above them is a frieze decorated with swags, positioned above two small casement windows.

The building has a parapet with flat columns marking the divisions between the bays, two of which are topped with finials. A dentil eaves cornice adds detail to the roofline. The upper three storeys are divided into bays by plain pilasters, featuring three-light casements with slightly arched heads. There are single keystones on the fourth floor and a triple keystone motif on the second and third floors. A moulded cill cornice is present on the second floor, with a similar shallow cornice above the first floor that links the keystones to the first-floor windows. These windows have arched heads that spring from the capitals of rendered pilasters extending down to the ground.

On the ground floor, there are three central windows with slightly arched heads and keystones. The left-hand doorway has been replaced by a modern window, while to the right, there are recessed double doors accessed by five steps.
