Description
Old Warden Lower School is a school built between 1874 and 1875 by Henry Clutton for the Shuttleworth Estate. It is constructed from yellow brick with stone dressings and features a clay tile roof. The building is a large rectangular block with a gabled roof and has single-storey entrance blocks at both gable ends, creating an asymmetrical front elevation.
There are two four-stage projecting chimney stacks, with the right-hand one missing its top stage; the bottom two stages of both stacks are combined with buttresses. The left-hand stack is flanked by two four-light mullion and transom windows, while the right-hand stack has two single-light windows with transoms. The entrance blocks have plank doors, and all openings are surrounded by simple chamfered surrounds.
A brick dentil cornice runs along the eaves, at sill level, and around the chimneys at transom level and the top. On the left-hand side, there is a square bell-cote with a tile-hung base, timber supports with curved braces, fishscale edged louvres, and a pyramidal roof with sprocketed eaves. The entrance blocks have rounded corners and plain parapets. The gable ends feature oeil-de-boeuf windows with semi-circular dripstones in the attic.
