Description
Packhorse Bridge is a medieval structure now used only for foot traffic. It features coursed ironstone with dressed limestone coping on the parapets. The bridge is approximately 40 metres long and about 2 metres wide at the middle, widening to 3 metres at each end. It has two pointed arches that appear to date from the 14th to 15th centuries. A central pier acts as a cutwater on the north elevation and rises to create a pedestrian refuge above. The parapet walls slope down to ground level at both ends, with the southeast section of the wall supported by red brick buttresses, likely from the 18th century. The bridge is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
