Description
No. 40 High Street is a cottage, likely originally a pair of cottages, dating from the 18th century. It has been mostly refenestrated in the 20th century when a porch was added. The building is timber-framed, with the frame of thin scantling exposed on the front elevation and rendered infill, while the other elevations are also rendered. It features a thatched roof with eyebrow dormers and a central painted brick stack. The layout consists of two rooms with a central back-to-back hearth. The cottage is one storey with attics and has a 2:4 window arrangement. The outer windows on the ground floor may have been built out with doorcases. The 20th-century porch is located on the right-hand side. The rear elevation includes an outshot and a 20th-century gabled dormer. Inside, there are two cambered brick fireplaces and exposed framing, which includes a spine beam and diagonal tension braces.
