Description
The Round House is a former base of a smock windmill, converted between 1805 and 1820 into a Picturesque cottage for John, the 6th Duke of Bedford. It was previously known as Windmill Cottage. The building is constructed of coursed ironstone, with some brick repairs, and is entirely colourwashed. It features a pyramidal clay tile roof, with some fishscale tiles, and has an octagonal plan with one storey and attics.
On the southeast elevation, there is a part-glazed door set in a cambered-headed opening. Above this door is a three-centred arch with a projecting keystone, and the brickwork beneath suggests that the arch was likely open before the conversion. Other elevations display round-arched recesses with projecting keystones; some are blind, while others contain casement windows with glazing bars. The southwest and northeast elevations have semi-circular eyebrow dormers that also contain casement windows. A central brick chimney stack is present, and there is an early 20th-century single-storey addition with a slate roof on the northeast elevation. The Round House is noted as an architectural curiosity.
