Description

This listing describes a row of three headstones located approximately 2.5 metres south of the south aisle in the churchyard of All Saints Church. The headstones face west and are made of ashlar, each standing under 1 metre high.

From north to south, the headstones are as follows:

(i) The first headstone is for Elizabeth, the wife of John Rayment, who died in August 1753 at the age of 26. The inscription is topped with two large winged putto heads, set against a background of clouds and sunbursts.

(ii) The second headstone commemorates John, the son of John and Elizabeth Rayment, who died on 26 September 1779 at the age of 56. It also includes a memorial for Elizabeth, the wife of John Rayment, who died on May 5th, 1746. This headstone features a raised rectangular inscription panel within an eared architrave surround. Above the panel are two winged putto heads, with foliate scrollwork along the edges.

(iii) The third headstone is for John Rayment, who died on August 1st, 1753 at the age of 26. It has a raised rectangular inscription panel in an eared architrave surround, with two winged putto heads and foliate scrollwork above.

These headstones are part of the historical fabric of the churchyard, reflecting the artistry and memorial practices of the 18th century.
