Description
Speedwell Farmhouse is a house that likely dates from the late 17th century but was reworked between 1795 and 1802 for the Bedford estate under the direction of Robert Salmon. It has an H-plan layout, is two storeys high with attics, and features an east cross-wing. The ends of the east cross-wing have moulded coping.
On the south elevation, each cross-wing has one window per floor, with the right-hand wing's window being off-centre. The central sashes vary in width, have glazing bars, and are set in plain reveals. The central block includes one hipped dormer with a small-paned two-light casement. There is a doorway to the right of the central block, next to the junction with the cross-wing, featuring a part-glazed door beneath a 19th-century timber open porch with a sloping roof. A colourwashed ridge stack is located at the junction of the central block and the cross-wing.
The road elevation has a first-floor band that continues around the right-hand end. Both the ground and first floors have three sashes with glazing bars in plain reveals. The attic features two hipped dormers with small-paned casements. The north elevation includes a two-storey gabled addition within the east angle, as well as various lean-to additions.
