Description

The Sculpture Gallery, located on the south side of the South Stableblock in Woburn Park, is a Grade I listed building. Originally built around 1790 by Henry Holland for Francis, the 5th Duke of Bedford, it was later remodeled in 1818 by Sir Jeffry Wyatville. This former conservatory, now a sculpture gallery with most sculptures removed, is constructed of ashlar and features a slate roof.

The building is a long rectangular block with a tall single storey. The south elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central pedimented bay flanked by four-window ranges. The windows are French doors with round-arched heads and glazing bars. The central bay has a broader window flanked by lower square-headed windows, creating a large Venetian window. All windows have moulded surrounds with decorative keystones. The central bay is accentuated by panelled pilasters on the outer edges, two large carved paterae above the Venetian window, and a tympanum that contains a carved relief of a bull. The central bay is topped by a shallow dome designed by Wyatville.

At both ends of the main block, there are small lower blocks, each with a slightly projecting central bay that contains a broad round-arched French window. The flanking bays have shallow recesses for sculptures and a plain parapet with a carved panel at the center. Inside, the central bay features eight antique columns that were brought from Rome by the 5th Duke and installed by Wyatville to support the shallow dome.
