Description

The ice house, located approximately 500 meters south-southeast of Basin Bridge, was begun in 1788 by Henry Holland for Francis, the 5th Duke of Bedford. It is built externally of coursed ironstone rubble with ashlar dressings and internally of brick. The structure is raised on a slight mound and consists of a circular domed design that is half buried in the ground, accompanied by a single-storeyed circular ornamental exterior. It is designed in the Gothick style, featuring an embattled parapet and two-stage buttresses. The exterior includes ornamental blind windows, all of which are pointed-arched single-lights under square heads. There is a pointed-arched doorway on the north side with a plank door that leads to an entrance tunnel, which likely originally contained two airlock doors. This tunnel opens approximately halfway up the inner chamber and features two trapdoors leading to the domed roof, which is covered with tiles, bitumen, and earth.
