Description

Basin Bridge is a Grade I listed bridge built around 1770 by Sir William Chambers for John, the 4th Duke of Bedford. It was significantly altered by Humphry Repton before 1813. The bridge is constructed of ashlar and red brick, measuring approximately 30 metres long and 7 metres wide, with both ends splaying out. It separates Basin Pond from New Pond.

On the northwest elevation, which faces Basin Pond, there are three semi-circular arches featuring rusticated stonework, with the lower courses and voussoirs vermiculated. The structure ends in large square piers made of smooth ashlarwork, topped with a cornice and a low balustraded parapet, which has small piers at intervals. The arches have red brick vaulting underneath.

The southeast elevation was likely originally similar to the northwest elevation, but due to the banking up of land and the raising of the water level by Repton, only the balustrade and terminal piers are now visible.
