Description
The Diocesan Youth Centre, formerly known as the Parish Church of St. Nicholas, is a church built of coursed limestone rubble, located on a hillside overlooking the village. The earliest parts of the building date back to the 13th century. The two-bay chancel and both the north and south aisles are in the Early English style. The north aisle features a contemporary doorway set within a gable mould, which has two moulded orders, a line of dog tooth decoration, and pairs of shafts in the jambs. The four-bay nave was rebuilt in the 14th century, with the north arcade being slightly earlier and supported by piers with four engaged shafts. Above each arcade, there is a 15th-century clerestory that includes three similar windows on each side, each consisting of two trefoiled lights under a square head. The roof was replaced in the 20th century. The west tower, built in the 14th century, has three stages and clasping buttresses at the west angles, topped by a broach spire that features two tiers of lucarnes.
